Boy George & Culture Club
The Chameleon Files 1981-2009
by (David Lindsay Parts 1-4) The Chameleon Files were then updated by Jordan Chiarulli for Parts 5-9) All pictures and scans were edited and crop by Jordan Chiarulli. A big thank you to Oliver,David,Adrian (Cyber Chameleon),John Graham (Quivver) Tasty Tim, Bell (More Protein),John Themis. The following discovery has a copy protected for all images. This has taken me 16 months to finish and I would not be happy to see all my hard work copied onto another website. I've spent many weekends of my freetime tracking information from fans, webmaster from other Boy George sites and even some of the musicans that remixed George's records. If you would like a copy of a image please feel free to email me at anytime at stchristopher28@aol.com or boygeorgefever@aol.com . If some information is incorrect or you know of something that is missing please feel free to email me so I can then add it to the growing discography page. There will be many updates with email alerts going out to you all. Sit back and relax maybe go grab some coffee or a cocktail and enjoy the discography of The World Of Boy George.
Have a great time

The definitive discography of worldwide releases: Culture Club, solo, outside projects, bootlegs and more.
This is a complete discography of all known releases of Boy George, Culture Club, and related artists. Included are releases from the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, and other releases that differ from those of their counterparts in the discographized nations. Also included are bootleg releases on vinyl and CD, plus some of the thousands of bootlegs made on video and audiocassette and CD. These cassette bootlegs are not meant to be comprehensive, obviously that would be impossible, but those of historical significance or of interest to the collector will be listed as completely as possible. You will find these listings, as well as solo and outside projects of each band member, in an attempted chronological order with the main discography.
Below each listing you will find the artist and format of each item. (I.E. "Helen Terry album", or "Boy George bootleg cassette"). If no artist is listed, it is a Culture Club release.
A final note: many fan-oriented and produced discographies will include fictitious or rumored releases. Not so here. Any item listed in this discography is a genuine release or is listed as such. If I don't own the item, or haven't actually seen an item first hand, it will only be listed as a "rumored release", or marked with a question mark (?) after its listing.

CULTURE CLUB
(DEMO CS)
First recordings by Culture Club (with Suede on guitar, not Roy Hay) were made in the EMI studios in London. These self produced tracks have never been released publicly in any form, but tracklistings were first published in the book "When Cameras Go Crazy". These recordings were not up to EMI's standards, and were shelved.
I'm An Animal
Kissing To Be Clever
The Eyes Of Medusa
Put It Down
→The closest any Culture Club fan has ever come to the demo of Eyes Of Medusa is from this picture of him @ EMI Records in 1981.

Later recording sessions in both the EMI studios and the Virgin studios begot the following tracks in demo form, which eventually led to Culture Club signing their deal at Virgin.
White Boy
I'm Not Crazy
I'm Afraid Of Me
Even later demo recordings from the Peel Sessions were broadcast on Radio One after Culture Club's success.
Boy, Boy (I'm The Boy)
You Know I'm Not Crazy
White Boys Can't Control It
There are obviously countless other demo cassettes of Culture Club material, most songs are committed to tape for rehearsals prior to final recording, and some of the unreleased songs which may exist purely in this form are:
Clone War
Woman (early version of "God Thank You Woman")
Inequality (early version of "Heaven's Children")
That Forgotten Guy (later re-recorded by Boy George to be included as a flip side to "Keep Me In Mind", but that version was also shelved.)
Alright Tonight
Mogul's Tomb
Life Has Rules
I Need Love
Lies
The 2002 Culture Club Box Set has featured many of these songs listed. Others have appeared on the One Man Bandit Volume 1.

Notes on “White Boy”
“White Boy” was the first Culture Club single released in the United Kingdom.
It was released on April 30th, 1982, to minor club play resulting in a chart placement outside the Top 40.
Video
“White Boy” has no music video however, several television performances of “White Boy” have been broadcast- most often as part of a televised concert such as the 1983 Seattle concert for MTV or the HBO broadcast of “A Kiss Across The Ocean”, but it was performed specially for the Australian program “Countdown” in Summer 1984, along with “It’s A Miracle” and Helen Terry’s solo single “Love Lies Lost”.
Live performances
“White Boy” was performed at almost every Culture Club concert from 1982 until the end of the 1984 Summer Tour in Australia. It has only been played live once since then, at a 2006 showcase featuring Sam Butcher on lead vocals during the brief period when Culture Club attempted a reunion without Boy George.
The Hidden Star Of David
If you read Take It like A Man, Boy George states that on the record sleeve for White Boy you can actually see the Star Of David inscribed into his eyes. Look very closely to the 12" sleeve and 7" sleeve and you will see a white star of David planted inside his eyes.

KISSING TO BE CLEVER TOUR
(CONCERT TOUR)
This first, brief tour around England fostered the seeds of popularity that grew so quickly for Culture Club. The sets were generally raw and fast, with just the four boys on stage. Some unreleased material was played at some of these venues, including songs like "Situation" and "Sharp Operator". George had not yet discovered the way to win over an audience's affection and would berate them with questions like, "Are there any poufs in the audience?" There is no basic set list for this brief tour, a selection of songs from "Kissing To Be Clever" with occasional songs performed exclusively on this tour.

TOP OF THE POPS
(TELEVISION APPEARANCE)
UK chart show featured Culture Club's first ever TV appearance anywhere in the world. Broadcast soon after the release of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", this performance is believed to be the catalyst for the single's unbelievable success worldwide. It was #33 the night of the broadcast and went to #1 the following week. Culture Club were invited back three more times during "Hurt Me's" chart history, a remarkable feat for a band as new and relatively unknown as they were then.

A KISS ACROSS THE OCEAN TOUR
(CONCERT TOUR)

This second tour to promote "Colour By Numbers" took place in the Spring and Summer of 1984 and was the longest Culture Club tour ever. It began in Canada, then after a lengthy tour of the United States (by Culture Club standards), it went again to Japan and finally to Australia for the first time. These shows were heavily documented by radio, TV, and bootleggers alike, due to their popularity, and are easily found in various formats. Of interest to completists: The home video released under this title was actually filmed during the Christmas leg of the "Colour By Numbers" tour. (According to the dates given in the various tour programmes.)
This tour was also the focus of the book, "Like Punk Never Happened: Culture Club And The New Pop" by Dave Rimmer.

PROFILE
(GAME & BOOK)
UK 12" picture disc (non-playable) of "It's A Miracle" game board as used in the video comes with 36-page book of photos and interviews. Housed in a gatefold album sleeve, it also includes 4 huge posters; one of each band member. Released by Assorted Images, this is not an official Virgin Records release. (But is done in cooperation with Culture Club.) There is no catalog or matrix number on this item. In the course of the interview, George mentions several songs intended to be released on "Waking Up With The House On Fire" that have to date never been recorded. These songs are "It's A Clone War" and "Woman" (possibly an early version of "God Thank You Woman"). Some of the lyrics to "It's A Clone War" are printed in the text and are:
How can you start a revolution
When the revolution's holding hands?
Kissing close ain't no confusion
Sailing boats for another man
It's a Clone War, clone war
You tread it, forget it if you ain't my kind
Clone War, clone war
Remember I'm the first in line
Me, I lift and separate
They are only surrogate

WAKING UP WITH THE HOUSE ON FIRE TOUR
(CONCERT TOUR)

This tour was as much of a shocker to the band as the previous ones were a surprise. Plagued by bad press, some of the early shows didn't sell out, some didn't even come close. The dates in Oklahoma City and Louisville, Kentucky were canceled altogether. This tour eventually picked up steam, but a creatively drained and emotionally troubled band made this tour one of the least pleasant for Culture Club insiders. The tour took a generous jaunt through the Mid-west and southern United States, places they had never played before, and a British leg was organized just in time for Christmas. As is usual, a healthy number of bootlegs are out there on any of the shows, but for sound quality, the best ones come from England. The final show, in Wembley Arena, was Culture Club's last UK concert (before reforming in 1998), and they closed the show with a rendition of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", featuring guest appearances by several pop dignitaries in attendance. (Among those included: George Michael, Elton John, Paul Young, and Bob Geldof.)

SURTOUT L'APRES-MIDI (SLAM)
(TELEVISION APPEARANCE)
Boy George and Roy Hay appeared on this French television show performing three songs acoustically. Broadcast live on a UHF station, and during a thunderstorm, picture quality of all known copies of this is less than desirable. Sound is also warped in several places due to these conditions. It is not known if this show has ever been rebroadcast. This was a very satisfying performance for George, he commented to the fan club that this was the first time he ever really cared for the sound of his voice live. Also included are several interview segments and videos.

In 1985, this single was re-released with the B-side replaced with a new dub version called "One Year On", featuring Midge Ure reading a tally of all the benefits derived from last year's sales over the instrumental. Subsequent re-releases are also available, and two new re-recordings are available, neither of which used George's vocals. These re-recordings are by the "groups" Band-Aid II (featuring late 80's pop groups like Bros and Climie Fisher) and "Dance Aid" featuring dance artists like Sinitta and Jimmy Somerville.}

LET'S BE MODERN
(CONCERT TOUR)
This final concert tour for Culture Club took them to a wide variety of places they'd never played before. Starting in Tel Aviv, Israel, the tour took them through a frightening show in Greece, a handful of undersold dates in Japan, an extensive and satisfyingly successful tour of Southern California (seven shows at five venues in seven days!) Then, off to Puerto Rico ("My favourite show with Culture Club"- Boy George), and finally back to the Eastern U.S. for one show each in New Jersey and Jones Beach.

BASIC SET LIST:

ROCK IN ATHENS
(TELEVISED CONCERT)
This was the second show of the 1985 "Let's Be Modern" tour, and part of an all-day rock festival in Athens broadcast on national television in Greece. Culture Club performed in front of an unruly, riotous crowd who came to see the harder rock groups and were booed off the stage in a shower of stones and rock-filled bottles. Keyboardist Phil Pickett was hit square in the head with a brick halfway through "Victims", and the concert was finished.

SOLID GOLD
(TELEVISION APPEARANCE)
During the Los Angeles portion of the "Let's Be Modern" tour, Culture Club appeared on this syndicated program performing "Love Is Love" and Boy George dueted with host Dionne Warwick on her classic hit, "Say A Little Prayer". Original broadcast date autumn, 1985. (Taped earlier in the middle of August.)
MOTOWN REVUE
(TELEVISION APPEARANCE)
Also during their Los Angeles tour, Culture Club performed "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" as a duet with Smokey Robinson (host of this short-lived syndicated program), and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" as part of the ensemble finale (with the other guests on that episode.) It also included a brief comedy sketch starring Boy George and a then unknown Arsenio Hall as a record producer trying to get the perfect recording out of George for his answering machine.
COWBOY GEORGE
(EPISODE OF TV'S THE A-TEAM)
One hour action drama starred Boy George as himself as a victim of mistaken identity, hired to perform at the "Floor 'Em" cowboy bar. Action and bad acting rear their ugly heads as Boy George and the A-Team foil a robber's plans to skip town with ill-gotten gains. Culture Club appear also in performance segments of "God Thank You Woman", "Move Away", and "Karma Chameleon". This episode has also been translated into at least two foreign languages for international broadcast: French and German. Released on DVD in 2006. See 2006
DISNEYLAND'S SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER SPECIAL
(TELEVISION APPEARANCE)
Culture Club debut "Move Away" and "God Thank You Woman" (not broadcast in its entirety) for the American audience on this children's special hosted by the cast of TV's "The Facts Of Life". One of the stars' poems about Boy George is also read during the introduction. Roy Hay does not appear, a look-alike fills in for him miming the guitar parts, as Roy wanted to remain with his wife who was due to give birth to their daughter, Sunny. "Work On Me Baby" was also performed at this appearance, but did not make it to the TV broadcast.

LIKE PUNK NEVER HAPPENED
(BOOK BY DAVE RIMMER)

This book examines the pop phenomenon of the early 1980's, where all punk ideals seemed to be chucked out the window for fame, glamour and money. The author chose to focus the bulk of his book around Culture Club's 1984 "A Kiss Across The Ocean" tour, mainly because he was on tour with them for Smash Hits magazine. This book is not authorized by any of the band members and while not necessarily full of inaccurate information, could (or should?) have been better researched.

HEAVEN'S CHILDREN
(WITHDRAWN SINGLE)
A tape of the 12" Remix of this track surfaced on a bootleg Fan Club compilation cassette in 1993. Information from Boy George's autobiography "Take It Like A Man" states white label test pressings were circulated in New York, apparently shopping for a new label. No commercial version was ever released in any country, however, UK promo copies may also exist. Boy George also claims to have made a video for this song, but the final editing on it was never finished. This raw footage is unlikely ever to have been broadcast or released. On George's birthday in 1986, a New York radio station played a demo version of this song and mistakenly called it "Inequality: Heaven's Children". As it turns out, "Inequality" was a rough version of the song with completely different lyrics about the migrant farm worker's plight in America. {"What if you're a Mexican?/ What if you're an Indian?/ What if you're a Puerto Rican?"}

ANTI-APARTHEID CONCERT
(BOOTLEG CASSETTE)
Boy George and Helen Terry perform at this June, 1986 rally against apartheid in London. George leaves the stage announcing to the audience, "I'm a drag addict, not a drug addict." Footage from this concert was used in almost all news stories about George's drug addiction, and a complete audience recorded cassette is in circulation, which is of average sound quality.
