Hello! My wife and I are traveling to Kolkata for the first time, and we want to get a bit of the local atmosphere and photograph the old neighborhoods around the Sonagachi area. We will arrive at Howrah Station in the morning, with lots of luggage and after a sleepless night on the train. We’re worried because local buses there are swarmed by crowds, and taxi drivers see foreigners and immediately make up astronomical prices or just take you somewhere else. Could you advise how we can get to our destination without stress, in a car with proper air conditioning and a driver who won’t try to cheat us along the way?

Also, could you tell us how far that area is from the station if we want to stop by Princep Ghat along the way to take a few shots of the Howrah Bridge? Is that route very inconvenient for a regular city trip?

Howrah Station is a total beehive! Trying to negotiate with the local taxi drivers there while carrying luggage is not a good idea. I was in the same situation until my friends recommended the GetTransfer service. So, here's the deal: you book a car ahead of time, pick up a fixed price, and the driver's got your name on a sign, so you don't have to go hunting for them. By the way, Howrah Railway Station to Sonagachi red light area distance via the riverside is about 8-9 kilometers, and it’s a perfectly convenient route if you book a transfer! Just let the driver know when you're booking, and they'll be right there waiting while you snap some pics of the bridge. It's much more comfortable than local taxis because the cars are well-maintained and often have child seats and Wi-Fi. Btw, have you figured out when you're gonna get there?
