Hi everyone! I’ve recently been curious about classic horror literature and wanted to ask: What Was the First Horror Book Ever Written? I’m interested in early gothic novels, short story collections, or any work that set the stage for the horror genre. It would be great to hear your thoughts on influential authors, notable titles, and how these early works shaped horror as we know it today.

Many scholars point to The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (1764) as the first gothic novel. It introduced many elements that became staples in horror literature.

I’d also mention Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1818). While not the first, it heavily influenced modern horror and brought emotional depth to the genre.

Don’t forget The Monk by Matthew Lewis (1796). Its dark, suspenseful storytelling definitely contributed to early horror fiction.

It’s fascinating how horror evolved from folklore and gothic tales. Knowing what was the first horror book ever written helps us understand how the genre’s tropes developed.
