Shreveport, Louisiana, is not a city that normally expects long, punishing winters. The region has a humid subtropical climate, and measurable snow is relatively uncommon. According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, measurable snowfall occurs only about once every other winter, while many consecutive years can pass with little or no measurable snow. Yet the city's history shows that winter weather can become dangerous very quickly when Arctic air, Gulf moisture, freezing rain, sleet, and snow arrive at the same time.
The most severe winter events in Shreveport have not all been the snowiest. Some produced substantial snowfall, while others were far more destructive because ice accumulated on trees, utility lines, roads, bridges, and electrical equipment. That distinction is important in northwest Louisiana. A few inches of snow can disrupt transportation, but a prolonged freeze combined with ice can threaten electricity, drinking water, heating, communications, and emergency services simultaneously.

Together, these events demonstrate how Shreveport's winter-weather risk has changed from a transportation problem into a broader resilience challenge involving power, water, public safety, and critical infrastructure.
The December 1929 Snowstorm: Shreveport's Historic Snow Record

The December 1929 storm remains the benchmark against which major Shreveport snow events are measured. The National Weather Service identifies 11.0 inches as the area's greatest recorded storm-total snowfall, with the snow falling on December 21 and 22. The snow was substantial enough that approximately half an inch remained on the ground on Christmas Day, making December 25, 1929, the only Christmas Day in the official Shreveport climate record with snow remaining on the ground.
It is difficult to compare the human impact of a storm from 1929 directly with modern events because detailed records of individual injuries, outages, emergency calls, and household losses are much less complete than they are today. Still, the sheer snowfall total tells an important story. Shreveport's transportation system, businesses, homes, and public services were operating in an era when modern winter-weather forecasting, road treatment, emergency communications, and rapid utility restoration did not exist.
For residents of the period, the storm would have created a very different kind of emergency. Travel depended heavily on roads and railways, communications were less redundant, and households had fewer options for obtaining emergency information. A storm capable of leaving snow on the ground for several days could interfere with deliveries, transportation, commerce, and access to essential services.
The 1929 event also provides a useful reminder that Shreveport's winter climate should never be judged only by what normally happens. The city's typical winter may be mild, but historical extremes can be dramatically different from normal conditions.

January 1948 produced another remarkable chapter in Shreveport weather history. The National Weather Service lists 12.4 inches of snow for January 1948 as the greatest monthly snowfall amount in its climate summary. Daily records show 4.5 inches on January 16 followed by 7.9 inches on January 19, with the January 19 total representing the greatest single-day snowfall in the long-term record used by NOAA-based datasets.
