Winter power outages are a serious concern in Marquette, Michigan, where heavy snow, strong winds, ice, falling trees, and difficult road conditions can combine to make even a relatively short electrical interruption much more challenging. Why Winter Power Outages Can Become Dangerous in Marquette

During a March 2026 blizzard, both utility crews and road crews faced high snowdrifts, whiteout conditions, and access problems while working to restore service.
These events highlight an important distinction: utility restoration is not simply a matter of sending a crew to repair a wire. Crews may first need roads cleared, downed lines made safe, damaged poles assessed, trees removed, and major portions of the electrical system repaired before individual homes can be restored.
Know Which Marquette Utility Serves Your Home
Before a storm arrives, determine whether your electricity is supplied by Marquette Board of Light & Power or Upper Peninsula Power Company. The Marquette Board of Light & Power serves the City of Marquette and portions of several surrounding townships. UPPCO operates across a much larger Upper Peninsula service territory.
If you are an MBLP customer, the utility provides a dedicated outage map showing affected customers and outage information. MBLP customers can also report an outage by calling or texting 906-228-0300. The utility's outage page is particularly useful because an outage may not automatically mean that the utility knows every individual residence has lost power.
For UPPCO customers, the company's Outage Center provides an outage map and instructions for reporting service interruptions. UPPCO lists 906-449-2011 for outage reporting and advises customers to stay away from downed lines and immediately call 911 when a dangerous line is present. Michigan's Public Service Commission also recommends checking your utility's outage map during major storm events because those maps are updated frequently and can provide estimated restoration information.

How Long Does Power Restoration Usually Take?
One of the most difficult questions during a Marquette winter outage is, “When will the power come back?” There is no single average restoration time that can reliably be applied to every winter storm. Restoration depends on the number of customers affected, the type of damage, accessibility of roads, whether poles or substations are damaged, the number of available crews, and whether continuing snow or wind makes field work unsafe.
In a relatively straightforward equipment failure, power could return within hours. In a major snowstorm, restoration may take much longer. MBLP's March 2026 storm updates show how conditions can change the timetable: on March 16, crews were still working through outages while high winds, whiteout conditions, heavy snow, and access challenges complicated restoration. By the evening of March 17, MBLP reported that service had been restored to all residential customers affected by that storm.
UPPCO's recent storm reports tell a similar story. During the November 2025 Thanksgiving storm, the utility reduced thousands of outages substantially over the course of the event but noted that remaining customers in remote locations could require additional work because of downed trees, wires, poles, and difficult access.
For that reason, households should plan for at least 24 hours without electricity and preferably have supplies capable of supporting everyone for 48 to 72 hours. The goal is not to predict the exact restoration time. It is to make your household comfortable and safe even if restoration takes longer than expected.
What to Do Immediately When the Power Goes Out
When electricity fails, first determine whether the outage is limited to your home or affecting the neighborhood. Check whether neighboring homes and streetlights are also dark. If only your home is affected, inspect your electrical panel only if it is safe to do so and check whether a breaker has tripped.
If the neighborhood is also without power, report the outage through your utility's designated system. Avoid repeatedly calling during a major outage unless there is an emergency, because utilities may be receiving large numbers of reports. If your utility provides text alerts, keep your phone available for restoration messages.
Next, unplug sensitive electronics if appropriate and turn off unnecessary appliances. Leave one light switched on so you can recognize when electricity returns. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A closed refrigerator can retain cold temperatures for a considerable period, while frequent door opening allows warm air inside.
Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible. Candles can start fires, particularly when residents are moving around a dark home or falling asleep. Keeping Your Home Warm Without Electricity

If your home has a forced-air natural-gas furnace, remember that natural gas availability does not necessarily mean the furnace will operate during an electrical outage.
