How Long Does Power Restoration Usually Take?

There is no single average restoration time that applies to every Minneapolis winter outage. Restoration depends on the cause, number of customers affected, road conditions, extent of equipment damage, and whether crews can safely reach damaged infrastructure.

For smaller outages, service may return relatively quickly. During a widespread storm, however, restoration can take many hours or potentially extend into the following day or longer. Xcel Energy says its restoration process prioritizes safety hazards first, followed by repairs that can restore the greatest number of customers.

What to Do Immediately When the Power Goes Out

Once the outage has been reported, turn off or unplug sensitive electronics. When electricity returns, voltage fluctuations can damage computers, televisions, appliances, and other equipment.

Leave one light switched on so you know when service returns. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A closed refrigerator can keep food cold for a limited period, while a full freezer generally retains cold considerably longer than an empty one.

Do not assume that a quiet house means the outage is safe. Walk outside only when necessary, and stay away from downed or sagging power lines. Treat every fallen electrical line as energized.

Staying Warm Without Electricity

Heating is usually the biggest concern during a Minneapolis winter outage. If your home loses electricity but the gas supply remains active, a natural-gas furnace may still be unusable because many modern furnaces require electricity for ignition, controls, blowers, and circulation.
