A winter power outage in Newark can become much more serious than a temporary inconvenience. When snow, freezing rain, strong winds, or falling trees damage the electrical system, residents can lose lighting, heating controls, hot water, internet access, refrigeration, and other essential services at the same time. In a city with a mix of apartments, multifamily buildings, row houses, and detached homes, the effects of an outage can also vary considerably from one household to another.

The best approach is to prepare before the electricity disappears. Start preparing as soon as you see a winter storm warning Newark appear — charge phones and battery packs, check heating equipment, gather blankets, and make sure everyone in the household knows what to do if the outage lasts overnight or longer.

Newark residents should also understand how the local electric utility communicates during outages, where to seek warmth if a home becomes unsafe, how to use backup heating equipment without creating a fire or carbon monoxide hazard, and what community resources may be available when an extended storm disrupts normal services.

Know Newark's Electric Utility and Outage Resources

For most Newark residents, Public Service Electric & Gas Company, commonly known as PSE&G, is the key utility to contact when an electric outage occurs. PSE&G operates an online Outage Center with a real-time outage map that shows affected areas, customers impacted, estimated restoration information, outage causes when available, and other status details.

The PSE&G outage map is particularly useful during a winter storm because it can help you determine whether an electrical problem is isolated to your property or part of a larger neighborhood outage. The company says its standard outage information is generally updated about every 15 minutes, although severe storms can affect how frequently information is refreshed.

Residents can report an outage through the PSE&G website or app, call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734), or use the company's text service after registering a mobile number. PSE&G also provides restoration updates through its account and alert services. If you see a fallen or damaged power line, stay well away from it and report the hazard rather than approaching it.

How Long Could a Newark Power Outage Last?

There is no single restoration time that applies to every winter outage. A small equipment failure may be corrected relatively quickly, while a major snow or ice storm can damage poles, transformers, distribution lines, trees, and other infrastructure across several communities.

PSE&G reports that its customers are restored from outages on average within about 62 minutes under normal conditions. That figure should not be interpreted as a guarantee for a major Newark snowstorm. The utility says typical system-generated estimated restoration times can initially range from roughly two to eight hours, while major weather events can produce substantially longer restoration periods.

After a major storm, PSE&G may first issue a broader estimated restoration time while crews assess the damage. More specific estimates can become available as damage assessment progresses. Severe snow, ice, blocked roads, fallen trees, and unsafe conditions can all slow the process because crews must reach damaged equipment before repairs can safely begin.

This is why Newark households should prepare for the possibility of a prolonged outage rather than planning around the earliest estimated restoration time. If the utility estimates that electricity will return in several hours, continue preparing as though the outage could last overnight. If power returns sooner, the preparation will simply have been unnecessary rather than dangerous.
