A winter power outage in Trenton, New Jersey, can become much more than an inconvenience. When snow, freezing rain, strong winds, or ice bring down power lines, a home can lose electricity, heating, lighting, internet service, and sometimes water-related systems. In a severe storm, roads may also become difficult to travel, making it harder to find fuel, medicine, food, or a warm place to stay.

Trenton residents need to think about winter outages differently from ordinary summer blackouts. A few hours without electricity may be manageable when outdoor temperatures are mild, but a prolonged outage during freezing weather can cause dangerously cold indoor temperatures and increase the risk of frozen pipes, carbon monoxide poisoning, house fires, and cold-related illness.

Start preparing as soon as you see a winter storm warning Trenton appear — charge phones and power banks, check your heating system, gather blankets, and make sure you know how to report an outage before conditions deteriorate.

Know Your Trenton Power Utility Before the Storm

Much of Trenton is served by Public Service Electric & Gas, commonly known as PSE&G. The utility provides an online outage map where customers can see reported outages, affected customers, estimated restoration information, and other available details. PSE&G says its outage information is generally updated approximately every 15 minutes, although information may be updated differently during major storms.

The PSE&G outage center is particularly useful because an outage can look different from one neighborhood to another. A nearby street may have electricity while another section of the city remains without service. The map can also show an estimated restoration time when one is available.

Residents can report a PSE&G outage online, through the company's app, by calling 1-800-436-7734, or by texting OUT to 47734 after registering for the text service. Customers can also text STAT to 47734 to receive outage-status information.

Save the utility's outage center on your phone before winter arrives. During a major storm, mobile websites can be easier to access than trying to locate information from scratch.

How Long Does Power Restoration Usually Take?

There is no single restoration time that applies to every Trenton winter outage. The length depends on the cause, number of customers affected, accessibility of damaged equipment, road conditions, and the amount of damage across the utility system.

PSE&G states that system-generated estimated restoration times for ordinary outages typically range from about two to eight hours. A major weather event is different. After a severe storm, blizzard, or hurricane, the utility may issue a broader restoration estimate while crews assess damage. Individual estimates can change as crews identify damaged lines, transformers, poles, trees, and other infrastructure.

That means residents should not treat an initial estimated restoration time as a guarantee. During a large winter storm, restoration can take considerably longer than a normal outage.
