The standard photo size for a desk picture is the one that will give ample room for the person to be visible, but not fill the entire frame. Smaller and medium-sized formats may be easier to use at the desk, since they can be placed in smaller frames and still allow for space to accommodate other items as Visuals Clipping explains. That will depend on how much tabletop space is available, and how much of a statement one wants to make. It is helpful to look at the frame specifications to see what size the finished display will be (since the entire display will be bigger than the photograph).
