Khelostar reports that Sri Lanka advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games men's cricket tournament after their quarterfinal against Nepal was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Nisshin, Japan.
Persistent rain prevented the match from starting, with the game called off before the toss. The result also affected bangladesh vs malaysia, as their quarterfinal was similarly abandoned because of the weather. Sri Lanka progressed because they entered the knockout stage as a higher-seeded team based on ICC T20I rankings.
Sri Lanka Advance to Semi-finals
Rain began several hours before the scheduled 9am local start and continued throughout the morning, making it impossible for the ground staff to prepare the playing surface.
Sri Lanka were among the four seeded teams in the tournament, alongside India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. With no play possible, the higher-seeded side advanced to the next stage.
India had also progressed to the semi-finals after their quarterfinal against Afghanistan was washed out. Pakistan received a similar benefit when their quarterfinal against Hong Kong was abandoned.
Bangladesh vs Malaysia Also Abandoned
The bangladesh vs malaysia quarterfinal was another casualty of the weather. Bangladesh progressed after the match could not begin, while Malaysia's campaign ended without an opportunity to compete in the knockout fixture.
Sri Lanka's progression also gives them another chance to improve on their previous Asian Games campaign. In the 2022 edition, Afghanistan eliminated Sri Lanka in the quarterfinal stage.
Asian Games Semi-final Schedule
The men's semi-finals are scheduled for October 1:
Bangladesh vs Pakistan India vs Sri Lanka
If the India-Sri Lanka semi-final is also washed out, India would advance to the final because of their higher seeding.
The tournament's knockout stage has therefore been heavily influenced by the weather, with multiple quarterfinals ending without a ball being bowled. Khelostar will continue to follow the latest developments from the Asian Games cricket competition.
